Technical requirements

The Flexible Learning Platform delivered by Tier 2, and described as tomorrow’s technology, is key to addressing a number of issues facing dental educators.  These include

  • online access to resources, text and images that may not otherwise be available to your school
  • providing access to an online international community of dental professionals that are able to contribute to and access curriculum content
  • providing access to a range of essential new administrative tools.

Therefore there are some standard technical requirements for using the UDENTE platform.

If an institution has no in-house IT to be taken into account it can use the plaform and everything will be provided for them. In this case the minimum technical requirement is a web browser (Internet Explorer 7 and upwards, Firefox, Safari and Chrome).

If an institution already has a Virtual Learning Environment which it wants to integrate, Blackboard/WebCT Vista 3 and 4, and Moodle integration are provided out-of-the-box.  Other VLEs will require some bespoke integration, on which we can provide assistance on a case-by-case basis.

If an institution wants to integrate its existing user database, the authentication service will plug into any system which supports LDAP (including MS Active Directory, Apache DS, OpenLDAP etc.).

If an institution wants to use the Standard Setting tool, it can import questions from any quiz authoring software which supports IMS Question and Test Interoperability (QTI) v2.0 (including Blackbaord/WebCT, Moodle, Questionmark Perception etc.)

Plugging the shortage gap by reaching out

UDENTE is a unique opportunity to offer our students access to one of the best available contemporary dental curricula. The Institute of clinical dentistry at the University of Tromsø is the northern-most dental school in the world. We have access to all of the modern information and communication technologies. However, access to good teaching materials in all subjects is not always available locally. The UDENTE project provides an internationally oriented, quality assured dental curriculum that our students will enjoy. It will also be very useful in providing an important, internationally recognized basis for the bench-marking of our own curriculum.
